Tailgating Tips for an Awesome Tailgate Party

One of the biggest parts of any good football season is the tailgate parties. If you plan on throwing one (or many) this season, here are a few tailgating tips.

  • Stay organized. Used a toolbox to keep all of your party supplies organized. It can include things like grill tools, wooden skewers, condiments and sauces, sunscreen, a first aid kit, a mini flashlight, hand sanitizer, and other items.
  • Pack a cooler. Of course you want to bring a cooler for your food, but knowing how to properly pack one can make a big difference. Make sure all containers are water tight. Put heavy bottles and cans on the bottom and add a layer of ice, pushing pieces in any spaces. Chill everything beforehand to make the ice last longer. Place other bags and containers on top of the drinks and add more ice. Pack it full to avoid pockets of warm air.
  • Prepare early. Do as much preparation the day before as you can. For example, putting food on kebabs, shaping burgers, slicing veggies, etc.
  • Skip the plates. To make clean up easier, only serve foods that can be eaten with your hands. Burgers and kebobs are a good choice, but you can also do walking tacos.

Whether you’re a local resident or just passing by, be sure to stop at one of these fun attractions soon.

Potter Park Zoo

This charming zoo features over 100 species of animals, including red pandas, bald eagles, a reptile house, and even Siberian tigers. It’s small enough to be walkable and enjoyable for families with young children, but big enough to keep you occupied for a casual day-long visit.

R.E. Olds Transportation Museum

As car buffs ourselves, it probably comes as no surprise that this automotive museum is one of our favorite spots in Lansing. You’ll find everything from old REO vehicles out of Lansing to bicycles to trucks. You’ll get plenty of background information on the history of automotives here while you check out a beautiful collection of antique machines.

River Trail

If you’ve been traveling and need a chance to stretch your legs, the Lansing River Trail is a lovely place to do it. This 13-mile paved trail runs through Crego Park and along the Red Cedar River and offers up plenty of beautiful scenery along the way. It’s a great resource for locals to exercise and explore the city, and a great place for tourists to stop and do some exploring themselves.

Owosso CarFit Driver Education

No matter your age, it can never hurt to freshen up on safe driving and mobile practices, right? That’s exactly what Baker College’s Owosso campus hopes to help older drivers do by hosting a CarFit driver education event. The event takes place on May 9th and is run by the college’s occupational therapy assistant program.

The CarFit driver education event will offer students a hands-on learning opportunity for students who are CarFit technicians. Senior drivers will move through three vehicle stops throughout a 20-minute checkup. Students will evaluate drivers based on CarFit’s 12-point list.

“CarFit is a win-win for our occupational therapy assistant students and for the elderly drivers who take advantage of it,” said Evelyn Greaux, the program director.

Elderly drivers who need assistance will receive information about local resources that can help them continue to maintain their independence. AAA, AARP, and the America Occupational Therapy Association jointly developed the CarFit program.

The Owosso CarFit driver education event can help motorists improve their driving skills to be both safer and more mobile. The free event starts at 11:30am and takes place on Baker College’s Owosso campus.

To make an appointment, call (517) 364-3743 or register at car-fit.org.

We here at Slingerland CDJR hope you’ll take part in this safety opportunity at Baker College’s Owosso campus!
